Smart transport, healthcare, security and energy all draw attention as cities get smarter. Transport comes first. It has become a driver of the economy and now reaches into daily life and work. What follows draws on a paper by Shao Yuan of the Shenzhen Urban Transport Planning Center on a complete intelligent-transport solution for the future city, and on building a "4C city".
For 20 years the Shenzhen center has worked on transport models and big data, and on planning urban and intelligent transport. It has shifted from a traditional planning institute to a provider of complete urban-transport solutions. The talk has two parts: a view of the future smart city and smart transport, then a first set of ideas.
Intelligent transport has moved through three stages. Stage 1.0 focused on single products and their functions. Stage 2.0 focused on connecting big data and breaking data silos. The newer stage 3.0 is a service-oriented smart city built on the internet of everything, with public participation and cooperation between government and business.
McKinsey summarizes the future of mobility in seven areas: shared mobility, electric vehicles, autonomous driving, new public transport, renewable energy, new infrastructure and the Internet of Things. Future transport is organized on connected, data-driven services, with sharing as a central service model.
